Tailored to Summer: Simple Skincare & Self-Care Rituals That Actually Work
Share
Summer is supposed to be a time of lightness, warmth, and glow but for many of us, it can also bring a unique set of wellness challenges. From skipping sunscreen to battling oily skin, the struggle is real. As a mom, entrepreneur, and breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand that taking care of yourself, especially in the heat, doesn’t always look like a spa day.
My Biggest Summer Skincare Challenge
I’ll be honest: remembering to do my skincare routine is the hardest part. I’m 49 with oily skin, and for most of my life, I thought moisturizers would just make things worse. So I stuck with just face wash and toner. It wasn’t until the past decade that I learned how crucial moisturizing actually is especially for oily skin. And don’t get me started on daily sunscreen. It’s still a struggle, but I’m learning that progress is better than perfection.
My Summer Must-Haves from Beyond Natural
Two things I absolutely won’t go without:
-
Lip Balm – Nourishing, lightweight, and never greasy. I formulated it after researching the best oils and butters for dry, sensitive lips.
-
Foaming Sugar Scrub – Gentle enough for my face but exfoliates and refreshes without leaving behind that sticky, oily feel.
These products weren’t just created for customers they were created because I needed them myself.
Self-Care Doesn’t Have to Be Fancy
Some of my favorite self-care rituals cost next to nothing. One of my go-to routines? A DIY spa night:
-
Shave your legs.
-
Use a clay or sheet face mask.
-
Light a candle.
-
Put on your favorite playlist.
Spa treatments at home. Easy, affordable, and rejuvenating!
My Saturday Night Reset
For years, especially after my mom passed in 2017, self-care fell to the wayside. But slowly, I found my way back. Every Saturday night, I do a mini-reset:
-
Soak my feet and exfoliate.
-
Shave my legs.
-
Paint my nails (Minion designs were my favorite!).
-
Wash my face and apply a mask.
This isn’t just skincare; it’s soul care. It’s how I prep mentally and physically for a new week.
Summer Ingredient Swaps That Matter
Let’s talk deodorant. After my 2019 breast cancer diagnosis, I started researching ingredients and I couldn’t unsee what I found. That’s when I began detoxing from conventional antiperspirants. It was rough at first, but worth it. I’ve tested tons of natural deodorants and am now working on my own formula for Beyond Natural. Because you deserve clean options that work.
Redefining Self-Care as a Survivor and Creative
Being a mom, business owner, and survivor reshapes how you see self-care. Some days it’s skincare. Other days it’s laying in bed with a good TV show. For me, creating is healing. Whether it’s soap, crafts, or content, that creative spark keeps me grounded. Sometimes, self-care is simply doing the thing that supports your health even if it’s hard.
That One Time I Sat in the Dirt…
In Spring 2021, I kept seeing people talk about “grounding” which is connecting barefoot with the earth. So I visited a friend who has a big backyard (aka dirt!). We sat in the grass, barefoot, chatting. And yes, she thought I was a little nuts. But it worked. I felt reset. When I can’t make it to her place, repotting a few plants with my bare hands does the trick. Try it. Get your hands in some dirt then tell me how it made you feel.

What I Hope You Take Away
